ADTRAN Targets SMBs, Distributed Enterprises with SD-WAN

Network access products specialist ADTRAN announced a new software-defined wide-area network (SD-WAN) offering that targets the small and medium-sized business (SMB) and distributed enterprise markets.

The company, which touts its next-generation open networking and subscriber experience software, said it "gives voice" to those markets because of the new product's ability to leverage cloud-based networking while keeping existing voice -- and security -- solutions in place.

Characteristics of the new solution as outlined by the company include:

  • Both outbound and inbound quality of service (QoS)
  • Seamless connectivity and control of cloud applications and voice services
  • Automatic detection of business-critical and performance-sensitive traffic
  • End-to-end visibility
  • Support for active-active WAN links, single IP failover and a cloud gateway component for control of cloud-based content
  • Multiple gateways across the continental U.S and its own redundant backbone between gateways, upstream feeds at each gateway, and connections for each customer location to two gateways for failover protection

"The benefits of SD-WAN are now available to more than just the large enterprise, the company quoted IDC analyst Rajesh Ghai as saying in an announcement. "With this move toward mainstream within the distributed enterprise and the SMB market, service providers now have lower costs, quicker installations and will lessen the real business impacts of the migration to SD-WAN. This market presents a compelling business opportunity for service providers that hasn't been fully addressed yet but needs to be as more companies look for SD-WAN solutions to move their companies forward."

ADTRAN said the new offering will be available through its service provider channel, MSPs, and select system integrators.
