Open Source flexiWAN SD-WAN Software Beta Ships

Israeli start-up flexiWAN announced a beta version of its open source, open architecture software-defined wide-area networking (SD-WAN) software is available for download.

The company emerged from stealth last spring with a mission to democratize SD-WAN with its open source, open architecture approach that it said signals a "second wave of SD-WAN" that will eliminate enterprise networking vendor lock-in.

The company recently announced beta version 0.1 of its offering is available for download, an initial beta release intended for testing and proof-of-concept implementations by enterprises and service providers.

Its key capabilities are said to include:

  • Automatic tunnel creation between sites
  • Flexible user-controlled network topologies: hub & spoke, full mesh and customized model
  • Support for both physical and cloud CPE appliances (flexiEdge was tested on AWS and can be extended to other cloud providers)
  • Support of Ethernet interfaces
  • Certified hardware and optimization is available

The beta comes in a software-only package or installed on a dedicated hardware appliance as part of a deal with Silicom.

Using the beta software requires the installation of the company's flexiEdge software. "Management functions are provided as a hosted service with which flexiEdge will connect automatically," the company said. "Self-hosting of flexiManage will be enabled in future releases."

The beta also comes with some limitations, such as supporting up to three flexiEdge devices, though interested enterprises can contact the company for larger deployments. The company said flexiWAN is already engaged in advanced proofs of concept with large tier-1 telecommunications companies, service providers and enterprises.
